What is a Video Game?

A computer game is something where players get to decide and control what happens to do certain goals or challenges.
Games can be very good or bad depending on their qualities. Games depend on their story or objectives. If games have an interesting story they can be very fun to play and beat, while if they have a boring story they will be bad games. Rewards can make a game fun too, as many players now play games just to get achievements on certain games. Graphics also play a part in making a game great, since older games are unpopular now because of their graphics. A game must also be balanced so players can face each other equally.

Digital Nation

I found it very interesting how multi tasking actually made people slower and not faster. I thought multi tasking made me faster at finishing stuff I have to do. I also found it interesting how korea was dealing with gaming addiction in schools and how they taught children internet responsibility.

What is an Operating System?

1. What is an operating system and what is its purpose?
What makes the device work, It allows people to use a computer.

2. What operating system do most computers come preloaded with?
Microsoft Windows.

3. Besides personal computers, what other devices have operating systems?
Cell phones, Wireless access points, etc.

4. Do all computers have operating systems? Explain
No, simple devices like microwaves don't need operating systems.

5. What are the three most common operating systems? Are there other operating systems? Explain.
Windows, Mac, UNIX. Yes, there are more such as linux.

6. What is one reason why operating systems are coded rather than physical circuits?
So that they can fix the bugs in the hardware.

7. What are the two main functions of an operating system?
Organizes and controls software and hardware.

8. What are the four types of operating systems?
Real-time operating system, Single-user, single task, Single-user, multi-tasking, Multi-user.

9. What are the first actions the computer takes when you power it on?
It runs a program that is usually a set of instructions kept in the computer's read-only memory(ROM).

10. What is the bootstrap loader? What is its function?
The bootstrap loader is a small program. It loads the operating system into memory and allows it to begin operation.

11. How does the OS manage the processor?
It gives each of the applications the necessary resources.

12. What does an operating system do when two processes are multi-tasking?

13. What is thrashing?

14. What is virtual memory management?

15. What is a driver?

16. How can input/output capabilities of a system be enhanced?

17. How do application program interfaces make it easier for programmers?

18. What is a UI and GUI?

19. Why is Linux being open source significant?

20. What are some other devices that run on Linux?

21. What are 3 things you found interesting about operating systems that you did not know before?

22. What is a question that you still have about operating systems?

Networking

LAN:
Full name: Local Area Network
What is it: A network that is confined to a relatively small area.
Example: Our modem is connected to the router which is connected to our laptops.

WAN:
Full name: Wide Area Network
What is it: Networks that span a wider area than a Local Area Network.
Example: The school probably uses a Wide Area Network.

a) Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cable
about 100 meters.

b) Coaxial Cable
about 1000 feet.

d) Fiber Optic Cable
about 2000 meters.

Router - Bridges connections in a network. It makes all information usable in a network connection.
Bridge - The way for devices to communicate on a network, and connects them to other networks
Switch - Allows peer to peer connections with devices on a network.
Peer to Peer : it enables users to share files with each others computers. Limewire or any other peer to peer downloading client is an example. Usually cheaper, but relies on the security and speed of each others computer. It can have latency issues and you may get viruses.
Client / Server : Uses a dedicated file server for functions in a network. Download sites such as megaupload, mediafire are examples. Usually more reliable, and faster, however it's pretty expensive and needs to be maintained.

Feb. 22 Reflection

Today I almost finished setting up the layers on my colour theory work. I learned how to create the layers today, because I was having problems making them on thursday and I had to start over today again. Layers made changing colours of certain parts of the picture easier because I was having difficulty with it before.

What is the difference between shade and tint?
Shade is a colour produced by the addition of black. Tint is a colour produced by the addition of white.

What is the colour system used for printing?
The Printers' color triangle, which uses cyan, magenta and yellow as the primary colours.

How can you ensure proper colour rendering in print?

What are complementary colours? Give an example
Colours opposite to each other on the colour wheel. Red and Green complement each other.

What are tertiary colours? Give an example
Colours achieved by a mixture of primary and secondary colours, such as yellow and orange mixed together to create a yellowish orange.

What is meant by a visually advancing colour?

What could cause vibrating boundaries to occur?
Bringing opposing colours together.

How can you find a complementary colour without a colour wheel?

What is an after image?
Its the image you see after looking at a hue for a prolonged period.

What is a monochromatic colour relationship?

What is an analogous colour relationship?
Colours located adjacent to each other on a colour wheel.

What is contrast?
When colours oppose each other and make each other stand out.

What could cause simultaneous contrast to occur?

Name and describe three of Itten’s Colour Contrasts
Contrast of saturation-contrast is formed by the juxtaposition of light and dark values and their relative saturation.
Contrast of light and dark-contrast is formed by the juxtaposition of light and dark values. This could be a monochromatic composition.
Contrast of extension-contrast is formed by assigning proportional field sizes in relation to the visual weight of a color.

How do you determine the dominant colour?
The colour with largest proportion.

How can you create an accent with colour?
Colours with a small relative area, but offer a contrast because of a variation in hue, intensity, or saturation.

What is the difference between contrast dominant and value dominant?

What is one method of identifying possible options for colour schemes?

Feb. 10 Reflection

Today I planned out my presentation and what I will be saying. I also finished up the research on craigslist's competitors and I found out that ebay started selling collectiveables, instead of what i thought, which were everyday items. I found it interesting how one man began ebay and became a billionare after about 4 years of running it.
